Poverty exists. Poverty hurts us all. We can all do something about it.

Anti-Poverty Week 13-19 October 2019

Anti-Poverty Week is about helping the Australian community to have an increased understanding of poverty and take action collectively to end it.

In the Northern Territory, we have the deepest rates of poverty and homelessness in Australia and that income inequality is widening – with the income disparity between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal households the highest in the country. At the same time, cost of living pressures are going up for those who can least afford it: with too many people struggling for the basics of food, housing and energy. Anti-Poverty Week is a chance to focus on what we can do together to end poverty and create a stronger community, including a fairer system of income support, real help into work, and easing the pressure on people in our community who are struggling.

This year during Anti-Poverty Week, communities across Australia are supporting the national Raise the Rate campaign, calling on the Federal Government to increase the rate of Newstart and associated allowances by at least $75 per week. Learn about the campaign here
