Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence

NTCOSS is active in advocating for the needs of the victim/survivors of domestic, family and sexual violence and the specialist domestic, family and sexual violence sector in order to address this pressing issue in the NT.

As documented in the NT Government’s Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Reduction Framework 2018-2028, on average there are 61 domestic and family violence incidents on a typical day and four domestic and family violence related homicides per 100,000 people per year (NT Government, 2018). In 2015, there were 164 sexual assaults per 100,000 people in the Northern Territory, which was almost 50% higher than the next highest jurisdiction (NTG, 2018). Aboriginal women are particularly impacted by domestic, family and sexual violence with rates of victimisation 18 times higher than non-Aboriginal women (NTG, 2018).

From June 2017 to June 2019 NTCOSS completed a project titled Building the Capacity of the Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Sector. The project’s deliverables included:

  • Establishment of NT wide DV network to ensure the needs and issues of specialist domestic, family and sexual violence organisations are understood and supported.
  • Regional engagement activities to improve the connections across the sector and within Territory Families, assessment and support for the workforce training needs of the sector.
  • Participation in the planning and implementation of the Domestic and Family Violence Practice conference as we know that improved practice will strengthen our client outcomes.
  • Assist with the engagement between the NT Government and the sector on key priority, projects and Framework implementation.
