Deputy Chief Minister Nicole Manison today announced an additional $340 000 per annum for one of the Territory’s longest-established not for profit social justice advocacy groups, the Northern Territory Council of Social Services (NTCOSS).

“This year NTCOSS celebrate their 40th birthday – a milestone in anyone’s book – so it’s especially pleasing to make this announcement today.”

“A key initiative of this Government is to forge strong partnerships with the non-government sector, to make sure we get the best outcomes for all Territorians.

“Government doesn’t always have all the answers, and by working closely with the non-Government sector we can often get a better outcome.  These are the people at the coalface; these are the people doing the research.

“We want to share in that knowledge and expertise.

“This Government will provide an additional $340,000 per annum to support NTCOSS’ operational activities, including two fulltime senior policy officers and funding to support their coordination activities across the sector.

“As the Territory’s first Minister for Children, I appreciate the work of NTCOSS in developing their Child and Family Wellbeing Framework and look forward to working together to deliver our Early Childhood Development Strategic Plan to make sure every Territory child is school ready by Day 1, Term 1, Year 1,” Minister Manison said.

NTCOSS Executive Director Wendy Morton says a strong commitment from government enables organisations like NTCOSS to continue to advocate for the most vulnerable in our society.

“Since the election, the new government has already demonstrated its willingness to consult and listen to NGO’s including NTCOSS. We thank them for this additional funding and the opportunity to partner with government.”

In announcing the additional funding, Minister Manison said the Territory Government believes in a strong, vibrant non-government sector and will move towards five year funding agreements with the non-government sector.

“Five year agreements free up their valuable time and resources, and give certainty to an organisation to allow them to continue the fantastic work they do,” said Minister Manison.
